John Howard Kane, who graduated from high school in June and is headed to Texas Tech University in August, made the most of July by winning the Clayfest, held at the National Shooting Complex in San Antonio. Kane topped a field of 187 shooters, posting a winning score of 95 in the main event on a course designed by NSCA National Championship target setter Pete Masch. As well as he shot, Kane’s victory margin was only a single target over a fellow Junior All-American, Louisiana’s Colton Raley. As a measure of how well these young men competed, former National champ Tony Rivera settled for third with 93. Clayfest is an annual event held on the NSCA’s home grounds, a one-day shoot featuring a 100-target sporting competition, 50-target 5-Stand, and single-parcour FITASC. The hugely successful Texas State 4-H Shotgun Championship is held during the week leading up to Clayfest, which takes advantage of showing off all the NSCA’s competitive disciplines to many youth shooters from across the Lone Star State. The Texas 4-H event is the largest multi-discipline youth shoot in the nation, this year drawing more than 600 competitors high school age and younger. The 4-H program serves as a great feeder system for NSCA youth competitors, as demonstrated by the 21 new members participating in Clayfest.
Clayfest not only attracts youth but a strong field of adult competitors as well. In addition to Rivera, All-Americans M1 Byron Justice (91), M3 and Veteran champ Vance Barnes (91), and the amazing Senior Super-Veteran champ Ray Tipton (90) slugged it out with the talented youngsters for HOA honors.
