On August 7, 2009, the US Bureau of Labor Statistics announced the most recent unemployment figures—14.5 million Americans unemployed. Add 8.8 million workers whose hours and wages have been involuntarily reduced and 2.3 million so-called marginally attached workers, and the total numbers 25.6 million. But these numbers belie the real toll of suffering in these extraordinary times. Few among us have escaped the jarring impact of the seismic economic events of the past months. In the wake of bank failures, collapsing automakers, and record foreclosures, there is just so much misery to go around that we forget about the most vulnerable institutions of all, the non-profits. Charitable giving is under assault by high unemployment, disappearing corporate profits, and growing deficits.
Fortunately, stalwart supporters for a wide range of worthy causes remain. One such organization soldiering on in the face of adversity is United Cerebral Palsy. On August 7, more than 200 shooters came out to Colorado Clays in Brighton, Colorado, to support the cause of children and adults with cerebral palsy by participating in the 4th Annual Straight Shot sporting clays event.
