Of the approximately 200 registered shooters who attended at least one event at the National FITASC Championship hosted July 15-18 by the Caribou Gun Club in south central Minnesota, nearly 140 challenged for the National FITASC title. The three-day event experienced big temperature swings from record low temperatures on day one to comfortable temps in the 80s on the weekend. Wendell Cherry won his second National FITASC title with 178x200. This was the largest National FITASC not held in conjunction with another big shoot, so Cherry should be especially proud of his title as he bested a large field at Caribou Gun Club. Curt Mauldin posted four 24x25 scores, but they weren’t enough to overcome 17x25 on parcour five, and he placed runner-up at 176. Local shooter Steve Greene earned third place with 175.
More than just clay targets were broken on the weekend. Hearts broke and tears flowed as word of the passing of Mark Kiddie spread. Kiddie died suddenly on Friday evening after entering the hospital a few days before. So unexpected was his death that shooters at the event were in the middle of producing a “get well” video for him when the news hit. A member of Team USA last year, Kiddie was a tireless promoter of sporting clays and a resident of Cincinnati, Ohio.
