The 200-target Wisconsin’s State Championship hosted July 29-August 2 by Waukesha Gun Club in Waukesha attracted 323 shooters, with Tennessee’s Wendell Cherry claiming HOA with 186. Diego Duarte won the resident title with 183, followed by Brett Dorak and Steve Greene. Duarte is a Colombian national who competed in the Beijing Olympics in skeet shooting for his home country. Wisconsin resident Paula Benbow captured the Lady concurrent for the fourth consecutive year. One of the event’s highlights was Cherry’s first-ever 100 straight during a registered event. Cherry, consistently near the top of the leader board in any competition he attends, is current captain of the All-American team.
Minnesotan A-class shooter David Deeb also straighted the 50-target 20 gauge event, leading a field of 46 Master-class shooters, including Greene and Jon Kruger, both of whom finished with 48, shaking their heads wondering what they had to do to win. Greene, a dedicated promoter of the sport and a great guy, was inducted into the Wisconsin Hall of Fame after putting together a quarter-century of excellent shooting.
