The New Mexico State Championship hosted by Ohkay Sporting Clays in Espanola, New Mexico, July 30-August 2 may have been the best state shoot New Mexico has ever had. The main event drew 193 total entries, which eclipses its previous largest state shoot by at least 70. The club easily handled the high competitor number flawlessly. Lewis Roberts, NSCA state delegate, did a great job helping Pete Engstrom prepare for the largest shoot ever held in New Mexico. Trappers were efficient on the main-event courses, the FITASC was run well, and the 5-Stands were well staffed. Especially for this tournament, Ohkay enlarged the sporting grounds to encompass a brand-new area where targets had never been set, a great move that allowed the target setter to use new terrain and freshen interest.
Mike McAlpine was brought in to design the courses, a real pleasure to have well-set targets at a shoot in the Land of Enchantment. The preliminary and main-event courses were a blast, and the 5-Stand layouts were also challenging, as was the FITASC. Wade Westerfeld worked hard at his new position at the club, and Buck from Promatic was there to keep the traps running.
