Gary Walstrom bested a field of 186 main-event competitors to become 2009 Missouri State champion July 27. Reigning Zone 5 champ Kevin Jacobson finished one target behind to claim runner-up and out-of-state HOA honors. River Hills Sporting Clays, located just east of Boonville, was the venue for this year’s championship. I admire many clubs’ abilities to tackle the myriad tasks it takes to put on a great shoot, but if there were a prize for most organized and efficient shoot management in the region, River Hills would undoubtedly win. The secret, I discovered, is club owners Kevin and Barbara Pickett’s meticulous attention to the smallest details and ability to juggle a lot of balls without dropping any. The shoot went off without any noticeable glitches, long delays, or backups on stations that seem to have plagued many major contests over the past couple of years.
