In late July during a period of record-setting heat, 162 sporting clays enthusiasts gathered at Tacoma Sportsmen’s Club to battle it out for Washington State Championship honors. Fifty-two hearty souls set forth on Thursday wielding pumps, side-by-sides, and small-gauge guns, while 128 competitors entered the 100-target preliminary on Friday. I was pleased to learn that 19 of the prelim shooters were young members of the Washington Youth Foundation headed by Jerry Johnson. Seventeen-year-old Mikie Hoffmann shot 82 in the prelim, only seven targets off the pace of HOA Mike Wilgus.
